The first half of August has flown by and I know some of you are coming back home. Schools are about to reopen, when possible, and we’ll be soon starting over with our usual routine.
To extend that summer holiday glow, today I want to share some tips on how to create a quiet corner at home. A spot for some alone time, away from the stress of daily life.
You don’t need to set aside an entire room; just pick a spot away from the hustle and bustle of the house. You will basically need comfortable seating, the right lighting, and very few, carefully selected furniture pieces and accessories.
1. Comfortable seating is essential
Your calm-down-spot firstly needs comfortable seating. It can be an armchair, a chaise longue, a rocking chair, a daybed, or a small sofa… go for the option you love the most and, above all, that fits the relaxing activity you are planning to carry out. Are you going to read a book, listening to music or meditating?
2. Bring in a few selected furniture pieces and accessories
Bring in a side table and a lamp. If it’s going to be a reading corner, you might need a small bookshelf (or a magazine rack), and an ottoman to rest your legs. Then accessorize with soft cushions, a blanket for the cold days, and a couple of candles or fragrance diffusers. Tailor the style on your needs but keep your relaxing corner minimal: a clutter-free space helps the mind to remain calm.
TIP: soft lighting soaks away stress. Choose a dimmable and adjustable lamp so you can adapt the light according to your needs.
3. Introduce plants
If you can designate a spot with a view into nature that would be awesome. But if your window doesn’t overlook a garden or a park, no worries. Fill it with plants and bring nature inside. They boost calmness and happiness and are good companions to spend your relaxing time with. Go for evergreen plants: in such a way your quiet corner at home will be always filled with nature no matter the season. TIP: no matter where you’ll create your quiet corner, try to separate it from the rest of the house. There are many beautiful folding screens
